Field help (ATBNIVDEC)

The definition level is used to specify the index fields that can be entered before reading a table. Variable [G]dclkey(0..) is used to enter these field values.

A positive level n defines the first n fields starting from the left of the index description, and a negative level specifies the fields starting from the right. To specify a definition level, the index must be comprised of at least two fields, without being homonyms, and the fields subjected to the definition must have a character type.
